Connect and Filter Facebook Ads (Meta Ads)

This article covers connecting Meta Ads to AgencyAnalytics and fixing missing or incorrect Meta Ads metrics with attribution filters.

Written by AgencyAnalytics Team

With the AgencyAnalytics Meta Ads integration, you can track and display Meta Ads metrics on your clients' dashboards and reports. Multiple Meta Ads accounts are supported per integration. See Understanding Accounts Per Integration

  • 37 months of data is available from the current date

  • The Meta Ads API only sends partial data for inactive ad campaigns

Click here to view all available Meta Ads metrics and learn what's possible with the Meta Ads integration.

Before You Start

The person connecting Meta Ads needs at least Employee permissions on the ad account, and they need to keep those permissions after the connection is made. If they lose access to the ad account later, Meta Ads stops pulling data and your dashboard shows a permissions error. See Fix a Meta Ads Permissions Error below.

Connect Meta Ads

Step 1: Open the Client where you'd like to connect Meta Ads, then click the Data Sources tab at the top.

Step 2: Click the blue Connect Data Source button in the upper right corner of the page.

Step 3: Search for Meta Ads in the search bar at the top, then click the Meta Ads card.

Step 4: Click the + Connect New Account at the bottom to open the authorization window, then follow the prompts to verify and finalize the connection.

Step 5: Select the account you want to connect from the connection list, then click Save in the lower left.

The integration is then complete, and your client's Meta Ads metrics are available for inclusion in dashboards and reports.

Fix a Meta Ads Permissions Error

If your Meta Ads dashboard shows a permissions error, AgencyAnalytics can't read that ad account anymore. The integration is fine. The Meta user who authorized it has lost the access it needs.

This usually happens when:

  • The person who connected the account was removed from the Meta Business Manager or left your agency

  • Their role on the ad account changed to one with fewer permissions

  • Your client revoked your agency's access to their ad account

  • Meta deactivated, closed, or flagged the ad account

How to fix it

Step 1: Open your Ads Manager Settings and check Ad account roles. Confirm the person who connected the account still has at least Employee access. Click here for detailed steps from Meta.

Step 2: If the access is gone, restore it in Meta. If that person has left, have someone with access reconnect the data source instead.

Step 3: Reconnect from the account-level Data page. Every Client connected under the same Meta authorization reconnects in one step. See Reauthorize or Reconnect a Data Source

.

If Meta has disabled or closed the ad account, your client needs to resolve it with Meta first. There's nothing to reconnect until the account is active again.

Fix Missing or Incorrect Meta Ads Metrics

Missing or incorrect Meta Ads numbers come down to one of two things. If you're seeing a permissions error, AgencyAnalytics has lost access to the ad account. If there's no error and the numbers just look low or blank, it's Meta's attribution settings holding data back, and the filters below will usually sort it out.

AgencyAnalytics data should match what you see in Meta Business Manager. If it doesn't, the filters below will usually fix it.

As of April 2021, Apple iOS users can block Meta Ads tracking, which causes some Meta Ads data to be incomplete. This data is incomplete in Meta Business Manager and in every other platform that pulls Meta Ads data, including AgencyAnalytics.

If you're not seeing the data you expect in AgencyAnalytics, check Meta Business Manager directly using the exact same date range and filters first. It's very likely Meta is blocking your access to that same data in Business Manager, too.

Why Meta Withholds Data

Meta Ads data is usually missing or incomplete when you're looking at ad campaigns (or ad sets) that use multiple different attribution windows. In these situations, Meta Business Manager refuses to provide sum totals and will tell you that your data "may not include" some users or that "statistical modeling may be used" on your data.

Since AgencyAnalytics can't access this data from Meta any more than Business Manager can, our widgets show the same missing data. Similar to how Meta Business Manager reports "-" when it refuses to provide some data, AgencyAnalytics widgets will also show missing data when Meta refuses to provide it.

Even though Meta is blocking your data, you can often access it using two AgencyAnalytics filters: the unified attribution setting type and the attribution window filter.

The Unified Attribution Setting

The "Unified" attribution setting type is enabled by default. It lets you access data that includes Apple iOS users. Alternatively, you can choose the "Account" attribution setting type, but this can cause Meta to show lower numbers for conversion-related metrics because Apple users are excluded from that data.

To access this setting on your Ads > Meta Ads dashboard, click the settings button at the top right, then select Filters.

The unified attribution setting is also available in Meta Ads widgets on reports and custom dashboards. Open the widget's settings (see How to Filter Widgets on Reports and Dashboards), then go to the Data tab to access it.

When you use Meta's unified attribution setting type, Meta may not allow you to view aggregate (sum) totals for some metrics, including app installs, purchases, and certain engagements. For example, an AgencyAnalytics stat widget, which shows sum totals, may not align with what's shown in a table widget, because Meta reports these two figures differently or blocks some of the data. This is the exact same data that's blocked in Meta Business Manager. Attribution window filtering, covered next, will usually let you get around this.

Attribution Window Filtering

AgencyAnalytics also lets you filter for ad campaigns (or ad sets) that use one specific attribution window. Meta refuses to give you access to data when you're looking at multiple different attribution windows at once, so to get around this, choose one specific attribution window from the filter.

This filter is available via the settings button at the top right of your Meta Ads dashboard, or when editing a report or custom dashboard widget.

The attribution window filter option

Once you've chosen the attribution window for your ad campaign or campaigns, Meta provides sum totals for all metrics. If you're running ad campaigns with different attribution windows, report on each window separately.

To quickly see which attribution window is being used for your ad campaigns, enable the "attribution setting" metric on your Ads > Meta Ads dashboard. The table then shows the exact attribution window used for each ad campaign or ad set.

Set Up These Filters for Reporting

We recommend configuring the filters above by going to Ads > Meta Ads in your Client's left navigation menu, then using the settings button at the top right to apply them.

Once configured, quickly add exactly what you see to a report using the "add to report" option under the Export button at the top right (see Add Any Dashboard to a Report). You can also add any widget to a custom dashboard via the "add to dashboard" option, found under the ellipsis (...) on any widget. Widgets added this way keep the exact same filtering you applied to the Ads > Meta Ads dashboard.

If you've tried the above and still can't get AgencyAnalytics to match what you see in Meta Business Manager, contact our support team and include full-screen images from Meta Business Manager. That helps us understand precisely what you're expecting to see.

FAQ

Can I still use AgencyAnalytics if all my customers' Meta Ads campaigns are under my own account?

This is a non-standard configuration and isn't recommended by Meta's best practices guidelines. Our dashboard isn't designed to work with this setup and can't differentiate between campaigns within a single Meta Ads account if they aren't split by customer. If this is the case for you, we recommend re-creating your Meta Ads campaigns within the Meta Business Manager interface, split out by client.
