Apply a Basic Filter
Step 1: From the report editor or a dashboard in edit mode, click the widget you want to filter, then click the Data tab of the Edit Widget menu on the right.
Step 2: Click any available dropdown menu, then click the checkboxes or use the search field to filter the widget. Filter options vary by integration, since each API provides different fields and dimensions.
Table widgets can also be filtered, letting you add, remove, or reorder metric columns.
Using Advanced Filters
Advanced filters give you even more granular control over your data, so you can drill into the exact details you need. Advanced filters let you filter by is, contains, matches regex, and more.
Is | Returns results where the field value exactly equals the specified text |
Is one of | Returns results where the field value exactly matches any one of the specified values |
Is not one of | Excludes results where the field value exactly matches any one of the specified values |
Contains | Returns results where the field value includes the specified text anywhere within it (single keyword only) |
Does Not Contain | Excludes results where the field value includes the specified text anywhere within it (single keyword only) |
Matches Regex | Returns results where the field value matches a custom regular expression pattern, allowing for advanced and multi-keyword text matching. Note: not all data sources support regex |
Does Not Match Regex | Excludes results where the field value matches a custom regular expression pattern, allowing for advanced and multi-keyword text matching |
These filters reduce limitations that might otherwise stop you from applying multiple widget filters, filtering ad creatives, excluding development pages, and more.
Currently, a 4,096-character limit per dimension is applied to the regex filter.
Here are some additional Advanced Filters that can be added for Google Analytics 4, Google Ads, and Google Search Console:
Google Analytics 4 | Audience filter, Events, Channel, Source/Medium, Pages |
Google Ads | Campaign, Ad Group, Conversion action name, Region |
Google Search Console | Keyword, Page |
Unfamiliar with regex? See Google's guides for GA4 and Google Search Console.
Apply an Advanced Filter on a Premade Integration Dashboard
Step 1: Click Add Filter at the top of the dashboard.
Step 2: Click the field you want to filter, then choose the filter type.
Apply an Advanced Filter to a Report or Custom Dashboard Widget
Step 1: Select the widget or widgets you want to filter. The widget sidebar opens on the right.
Step 2: Click the dropdown for the field you want to filter, choose your filter type, enter your value, then click Apply Filter.
In the example below, the Country filter is available to include the United States from an international user report.
Step 3: Repeat this process to add more filters and further refine your data.
Can I Use Advanced Filters in Custom Metrics or Custom Goals?
Not yet, but this feature is under development. We're currently working to improve the interface for adding advanced filters to Custom Metrics and Goals.
Filter Widgets for Specific Ad Campaigns
Step 1: From the report editor or a dashboard in edit mode, click the widget you want to filter, then click the Data tab of the Edit Widget menu on the right.
Step 2: Scroll to the Ad Campaign filter, then click the dropdown.
Step 3: Search by keyword, then check the boxes to include those campaigns in this widget's filter.
Configure Additional Widget Settings
Beyond filtering, you can fine-tune how a widget displays and behaves.
Set Individual Widget Date Ranges
Step 1: In edit mode on a dashboard or in the report editor, click the widget you want to update.
Step 2: Under the General tab on the right menu, scroll to Override Date Range, then click the toggle to turn it on.
Step 3: In the date range pop-up, set the date range and comparison period for the selected widgets, then click Apply.
The selected widgets now override the report or dashboard date range to display details from the chosen date range and comparison range.
Add Multiple Metrics in a Single Chart Widget
Bar, line, and area graphs let you compare two metrics within a single widget.
Step 1: Click a compatible widget, then click the Data tab of the Edit Widget menu.
Step 2: Click the Metrics field, then select a second metric to display on the graph.
Once selected, the chart widget reloads and shows the first metric name on the left and the second on the right side of the chart.
Add a Secondary Dimension to a Graph Widget
Secondary dimensions let you display more detailed data for your clients. In the example below, the graph shows the GA4 Sessions metric organized by the primary dimension Date.
To add a secondary dimension:
Step 1: Click the widget in the report editor or from edit mode in a dashboard, then click the Data tab.
Step 2: Click the dropdown, then select the secondary dimension.
In this example, Device Category has been applied to the bar chart. Not every metric supports every secondary dimension. This depends on the integration API and the dimensions included when the data is sent. For more details, see Secondary Dimensions in Widgets.
Add Thresholds and Annotations to Graph Widgets
Thresholds and annotations are great ways to indicate targets you want to hit or point out changes on your graphs for your clients.
Step 1: From the report editor or a dashboard in edit mode, click the widget you want to edit to open the widget sidebar.
Step 2: Click the Annotations or Thresholds tab, then click Add Annotation or Add Threshold at the bottom.
Step 3: Enter a name for the threshold that displays on the chart, and a value for it to display.
In this example, a threshold titled "Monthly Sessions Goal" is set with a value of 1000, making it easy to see at a glance which months exceeded the goal.
Annotations are notes added to a specific date on the chart. In this example, March was the most successful month of the year, so an annotation highlights that the success came from a UI update earlier in the quarter.
Display Data Labels, Trend Lines, Anomalies, and Forecasting
More visual options are available for different chart types under the Display tab of the Edit Widget menu.
Click the Gray Toggle to turn any of these display options on or off for the chart.
You can also toggle on Trend Forecasting and Anomaly Detection under the Display tab.
Once the report or dashboard is saved, hovering over a red or green anomaly dot reveals a tooltip with more information about the anomaly. Hovering over the right half of a chart with trend forecasting reveals a tooltip with basic, optimistic, and pessimistic forecasts.
Add Custom Tooltips to Widgets
Custom tooltips let you give your clients extra information about the metrics you're tracking for them.
Click the widget you want to edit, then enter the information you want in the Tooltip field.
When a client views the report or dashboard, they can hover over the widget to reveal a blue question mark icon. Moving the cursor over the icon shows the custom tooltip.
