Connect Google Analytics

To avoid a failed connection or error when integrating Google Analytics with a Client, the person connecting must have:

  • Have Analyst, Editor, or Administrator permissions with no data restriction and direct permissions

  • Be added to both the Google Analytics account and the relevant Google Analytics Property

If the above requirements are met, simply follow these steps to connect:

  1. Open the Client where you'd like to connect to Google Analytics, then click the Data Sources tab at the top.

  2. Click the blue Connect Data Source button in the upper right corner of the page.

  3. Search for Google Analytics in the search bar at the top, then click the Google Analytics card.

  4. Click the grey + sign at the bottom to launch the authorization window, then follow the prompts in the OAuth window to sign in and authorize.

After signing in, read the access information, then click Allow to authorize the connection. The window will load for a few moments before closing automatically.

The new account will now be authorized and added to the connections list. Select your account, then click 'Connect' at the bottom left to finish the process.

If your Google Analytics integration ever disconnects, you can learn how to easily manage a disconnected integration here.

❓ Google Analytics FAQ

Why do my numbers change when I switch the Channel Type filter?

Channel Type controls which underlying GA4 dimension is used to group your channel data; it's not just a display filter, it actually changes what's being measured.

  • Traffic Acquisition - session-based data; shows the channel that brought users in when they started a new session

  • User Acquisition - user-based data; shows the channel that brought users to your site for the very first time

  • Default Acquisition - uses your property's default attribution model (data-driven by default)

Because each option uses a different attribution model and scope (event, session, or user), the numbers will differ. Neither is wrong; they're just answering different questions about your traffic.

Why are some of my Google Analytics widgets showing no data when Channel Type is set to Default?

Certain metrics are incompatible with the Default channel type. When one of these metrics is filtered by Default, the widget returns no data rather than an error.

To fix it, switch the Channel Type to Sessions (or another available option) using the filter on your dashboard or report. If the widget loads data after switching, the metric isn't compatible with Default.

Metrics that don't support the Default channel type include: ARPU, Average Purchase Revenue, ARPPU, Event Count, Event Count Per User, Events per Session, First-time Purchaser Conversion Rate, New Users, Purchaser Conversion Rate, Publisher Ad Impressions, Publisher Ad Clicks, User Engagement, Average Engagement Time, Average Engagement Time Per Session, Views, and Transactions.

Why can't I find a specific page in the Page filter?

When using the basic filter, AgencyAnalytics only lists the top 4,000 pages ordered by views. If your page isn't appearing, it likely doesn't have enough views to make the list.

Switch to the advanced filter, it doesn't have this limit and lets you search for any page.

Why is my Custom Audience not showing?

A custom audience is tied to the account that set it up; it is not tied to the property. If user X created the custom audience, and you connected the Google Analytics integration using user Y's credentials, that custom audience won't show up within AgencyAnalytics unless you use user X's credentials or account.

Additionally, the custom audience will not appear in your AgencyAnalytics account if it contains fewer than 10 active users.

Why aren't my Events or Key Events showing up in AgencyAnalytics?

If event names include spaces in Google Analytics, they won't display on our end and will need to be renamed in order to show up. You can learn more about this here.

Why are some Events missing from my GA4 table widget?

A line item only appears in a table widget if at least one of its metric values contains data. If all metrics return zero for a given event, that event is excluded from the table.

Why am I seeing an "Access blocked: authorization error" when connecting to Google Analytics?

This error means your Google account is managed by an organization (Google Workspace), and the admin has restricted third-party apps from accessing account data. AgencyAnalytics is being blocked at the organization level.

To fix it, ask your Google Workspace admin to allow access to third-party apps for your account. These Google support articles walk through the steps:

Why are my New Users higher than my Total Users in GA4?

This is expected behavior from GA4, not a data error. GA4 resets sessions at midnight, which can cause returning visitors to be counted as new users at the start of the next day. This occasionally causes the New Users count to exceed the Total Users count for a given date. The numbers will balance out as more users visit throughout the day.

Why am I seeing a "Rate Limit Exceeded" or "Concurrent Requests Limit Reached" error on my GA4 widgets?

This error occurs when too many GA4 API requests are sent simultaneously. Google enforces limits on how often data can be pulled, and AgencyAnalytics hits those limits when many GA4 widgets load simultaneously. The most common triggers:

  • Too many GA4 widgets in view - keep it to around 10 GA4 widgets per dashboard or report section to stay within safe limits

  • Rapid scrolling - scrolling quickly through a dashboard fires API calls for every widget that appears on screen

  • Large PDF exports - exporting a report with many GA4 sections sends requests for all widgets at once

The quota resets automatically, typically within an hour. If you're hitting this regularly, try reducing the number of GA4 widgets per section or splitting them across multiple dashboards.

Why does my Source/Medium basic filter only show 90 days of data?

The basic filter for Source/Medium is limited to the last 90 days to keep load times fast and avoid hitting Google's API rate limits. If you need data older than 90 days, switch to the advanced filter; it doesn't have this restriction.

Can I use the Source/Medium filter in AgencyAnalytics to mirror my native GA4 data exactly if the filter applied in GA4 is either Source or Medium?

No, the Source/Medium filter in AgencyAnalytics only mirrors the Source/Medium filter in GA4. It doesn’t work if you applied a Source-only or Medium-only filter in GA4’s native interface.

Why aren't older events showing up in my basic filter?

The basic filter shows only events from the last 240 days with a non-zero event count. Events outside that window or with no recorded activity won't appear in the list.

To see older events or events with zero counts, switch to the advanced filter.

Why doesn't the Page filter work the same as a Landing Page filter?

These two filters measure different things and aren't interchangeable. The Page filter matches on the full page path and query string; it shows activity on a specific page regardless of how users entered the site. The Landing Page filter shows data for pages where users began their session.

Make sure you're using the right filter for what you're trying to measure.

Why is my Roll Up Table's GA4 data not always showing exactly matching data when compared to my GA4 integration data?

This is because GA4's API provides two types of data: 'breakdown by date', which we use for the Roll Up table, and 'summary data', which we use for all other GA4 integration data. As the 'breakdown by date' data isn't always exactly aligned with the GA4 'summary data' and since the Roll Up table requires data to be saved, which we are only able to do with 'breakdown by date' data, this explains the occasional discrepancies you can see.
