Add and Edit Widgets on Hover

This article covers how “add on hover” works, how to turn it on or off for your account, and how it's different from the Add Widget toolbar.

Widgets on Hover

“Add on hover” is a faster way to build dashboards and reports. Instead of dragging widgets in from the toolbar, you hover over an empty spot on the page, click, and pick what you want to add.

There are two ways to add widgets to a dashboard or report:

  • The Add Widget toolbar on the right side of the editor. This is the default for existing accounts. See Widgets Overview for how it works

  • Add on hover, where you click an empty spot on the page and choose a widget from there

Add on hover keeps you on the page while you build. You don't have to scroll a toolbar, find your widget, and drag it across the screen. You click where you want the widget, pick it, and it lands there.

Add on hover is an account-wide setting, and it's turned off by default. You'll keep using the Add Widget toolbar until you turn it on. New accounts made after Sept 28th, 2026, start with Add on hover already on.

Turn On Add on Hover

Step 1: Open any dashboard or report in edit mode, then click Page Setup. This setting applies to your whole account, so it doesn't matter which page you open it from.

Step 2: Turn on Add on hover.

The Add Widget toolbar disappears from the right side of the editor. That's expected. You'll add widgets from the page itself now.

Add on hover applies to every dashboard and report in your account, and to everyone on your team. Your teammates will see the Add Widget toolbar disappear too.

Add a Widget on Hover

Step 1: Hover over any empty part of your dashboard or report. A ghost cell appears to show you exactly where the widget will land.

Step 2: Click the ghost cell to open the widget picker.

Step 3: Hover any metric in the list to preview it before you commit. The preview shows you the real widget with your data in it, as well as a description of what type of data it shows.

Step 4: Click the row to add the widget to your page. Your widget drops into the spot you picked, and the edit panel opens below it automatically.

Edit a Widget

Once Add on hover is on, the edit panel opens below the widget instead of in the sidebar on the right.

Step 1: Click any widget on your dashboard or report.

Step 2: The edit panel opens below it. Change the chart type, filters, dimension, or date interval from here. Click the x on the panel or click off of the report (as seen in the GIF below). The panel opens automatically right after you add a widget, and any time you click a widget after that.

Settings That Carry Over

When you add several widgets in a row, Add on hover remembers what you picked last so you don't have to set it up again every time.

These settings carry over to the next widget you add:

  • Chart type

  • Filters

  • Dimension

  • Date interval

They reset as soon as you close the popover. So if you're building a page of bar charts with the same filter, keep the popover open and they'll all match. If you want to start fresh, close the popover and open it again.

Turn Off Add on Hover

You can switch back to the Add Widget toolbar at any time until the beta is over.

Step 1: Click Page Setup.

Step 2: Scroll down in the right-hand panel and toggle off "Add on hover".

The Add Widget toolbar comes back on the right side of the editor, and clicking a widget opens the Edit Widget sidebar again. Nothing you've already built changes.

❓ FAQ

Where did the Add Widget toolbar go?

Add on hover is turned on for your account. The toolbar is hidden on purpose, since you add widgets from the page instead. To bring the toolbar back, click Page Setup and turn off Add on hover.

How do I tell which one I have?

Look at the right side of the editor. If you see the widget toolbar, you're using the Add Widget toolbar. If there's no toolbar and hovering an empty area shows a ghost cell, you're using Add on hover.

Can I still drag and drop widgets?

Yes. Resizing, repositioning, and moving widgets between sections all work exactly the same way in both. The only thing that changes is how you add a widget and where the edit panel opens.

Can I turn it on for just one report?

No. Add on hover is an account-wide setting. Turning it on switches every dashboard and report in your account, for every user on your team.

Can I switch back and forth?

Yes, for now. Turn Add on hover on or off as often as you like. Your dashboards and reports look and work the same either way.

Will this change my existing dashboards and reports?

No. Add on hover only changes how you add and edit widgets. Widgets you've already added stay exactly where they are.

Why do my new widgets keep using the same chart type and filters?

That's on purpose. Chart type, filters, dimension, and date interval carry over while the popover is open so you can add matching widgets quickly. Close the popover to reset them.
