⚙️ Resolving a missing Sitemap.xml warning

Site Auditor will report a "Missing Sitemap.xml Reference" warning if your website doesn't have a sitemap or if the URL "yourwebsite.com/robots.txt" could not be found.

First, verify that your website has a sitemap URL:

  • In your browsers, type your domain name followed by /sitemap.xml (for example, yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml) OR

  • Open Google Search and type " site:yourdomain.com filetype.xml " in the search bar.

If you can't find a sitemap for your website, one needs to be added. Use your content management system or reach out to your web developer to create one.

With the Sitemap URL located, follow these steps:

  1. Open a new tab in your browser

  2. Type your domain name, adding /robots.txt at the end of your URL (for example, www.yourdomain.com/robots.txt).

  3. Open the search bar with ctrl+f then type 'Sitemap' to find where the robots.txt file was placed

Check that the URL in your robots.txt file identically matches the Sitemap URL you located. It must be the complete URL, for example http://yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml, not /sitemap.xml)

If the right Sitemap URL is inside your website's robots.txt file, reach out to our customer support team for assistance.

Why is Site Auditor showing a low word count warning?

Each of your website's pages should have at least 200 words to ensure pages are properly indexed. Site Auditor will report a "Low Word Count" if your page has less than 200 words.

Site Auditor counts any text separated by a space as a word, including numbers and words with a single character, such as "a". Hidden text on the page, such as foldable menus hidden with CSS. Site Auditor will exclude words that are not part of the document, such as fallback text that shows when a video fails to load.

Site Auditor is flagging NoFollow links

When a NoFollow link is broken, it will still impact your websites SEO, even though you've set it to NoFollow. Site Auditor intentionally crawls and flags these links to ensure you're not being negatively impacted by issues like this.

How is the Site Auditor score calculated?

Each page is scanned and scored based on the type and number of issues Site Auditor finds. This is weighted so that critical issues have more influence than errors, and errors have more influence than warnings, with the highest possible score being 100%.

  • Pages with Critical issues are automatically given a 0%

  • Errors reduce the score substantially

  • Warnings reduce the page's score slightly

Page-level scores are combined to form an overall site-wide score. Page depth is taken into consideration, with deeper pages having less impact on your overall score.
