More advanced filters across key integrations

We're introducing advanced filtering options to enable more precise segmentation and reporting, starting with Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console, and Google Ads.

Contains

Matches results where the field includes the specified text anywhere within it (can only incl. one keyword).

Does Not Contain

Excludes results where the field includes the specified text anywhere within it (can only incl. one keyword).

Equals

Matches results where the field value exactly matches the specified text.

Does Not Equal

Excludes results where the field value exactly matches the specified text.

Regex

Matches results based on a custom regular expression pattern for advanced text matching (can incl. multiple keywords).

These new filters reduce current limitations that might prevent you from applying multiple widget filters, filtering ad creatives, excluding development pages, and more!

Unfamiliar with Regex? Learn more about regex filtering in Google Analytics 4 here, and in Google Search Console here.

How to apply advanced filters

The new filters can be applied to the default premade dashboards or when adding widgets to a custom dashboard or report.

When viewing premade dashboards, click Add Filter at the top, then click what you'd like to filter, then lastly the filter type.

When adding or editing widgets to dashboards or reports, select the widget(s) you wish to filter. The widget sidebar will open to the right. Click the dropdown you wish to filter by, then choose your filter type and hit Apply Filter.

In this example we're using the Country is not one of filter to exclude Canada and the United States from our international user report.

After clicking apply our three selected widgets will update to display the now filtered data.

You can repeat the process to add additional filters to refine your data even further.

Why aren't advanced filters available for all data sources?

We want to make sure this feature is properly adjusted for all the different integrations we support, which does take time as each integration provides different metrics, data points, and dimensions.

The initial release includes Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console, and Google Ads, after which we plan to roll this out to other compatible data sources.

Can I use these filters in Custom Metrics or Custom Goals?

Not yet, but this is a feature under development. We're currently working to improve interface elements for adding advanced filters to Custom Metrics and Goals. More details coming soon!
