Connect Ahrefs

How to set up our Ahrefs backlinks integration

Written by AgencyAnalytics Team

Ahrefs

With the AgencyAnalytics Ahrefs integration, you can combine backlink data with keyword performance and organic traffic stats to give your clients the tools they need to boost their search rankings.

API and Data Access

  • Data is synced every 12 hours

  • Historical data is not available; values from the date of connection will back-fill values

  • Must have a Paid Ahrefs Plan with API access and API credits

  • Data sections available: Site Explorer, Keyword Explorer (requite Keyword List ID; pulling this data will result in credit usage on the Ahrefs side.), AI Visibility (require Brand Radar Report ID), Rank Tracker, Site Audit, Backlinks

🔌 Connect Ahrefs

To avoid a failed connection or error when integrating Ahrefs to a Client, the person connecting must have:

If the above requirements are met, simply follow these steps to connect:

  1. Open the Client where you'd like to connect Ahrefs, then click the Data Sources tab at the top.

  2. Click the blue Connect Data Source button in the upper right corner of the page.

  3. Search for Ahrefs in the search bar at the top, then click the Ahrefs card.

  4. Click the 'Authorize' button to launch the OAuth window, then follow the prompts to verify and finalize the connection.

After accepting the pop-up prompts, your Ahrefs account will be connected, and you can start adding Ahrefs data to your dashboards and reports.

Note: to begin pulling Keyword Explorer and AI Visibility data, you'll need to update your Ahrefs data source settings, add your relevant IDs, and set your row limit. Pulling Keyword Explorer data will result in credit usage on the Ahrefs side.

Your client's URL Scope will influence Ahrefs backlinks. For optimal functionality, this must be updated in Client settings to match your settings in the native Ahrefs platform.

What's new

Five new areas are now available in your Ahrefs reports:

  • Brand Radar: See how often your brand shows up in AI answers (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and more), which pages get cited, and how your visibility compares with competitors.

  • Keyword Explorer: Research your saved keyword lists: search volume, ranking difficulty, cost-per-click and more.

  • Site Explorer: The organic keywords your site ranks for, plus your Domain and URL strength over time. It's now also home to your Backlinks, Referring Domains and Anchors pages: each rebuilt as a single page with all of its tables in one place.

  • Rank Tracker: Follow your target keywords: current position, movement up or down, search volume and estimated traffic, plus a SERP view of exactly who ranks around you.

  • Site Audit: Your site's crawl health: an overall health score, how many pages have errors or warnings, and the specific issues affecting your pages.

Ahrefs FAQ

How does the Ahrefs integration fetch data?

We use the client's URL to determine which website to show backlinks for within each client.

How do I know if I have Ahrefs API credits available on my plan?

Different Ahrefs plans have different credit amounts available. You'll need to check your Ahrefs account to verify your API access and API credits.

You can view API credit/unit usage in Ahrefs > Account Settings > Limits and Usage.

Why am I using more Ahrefs API credits than before?

We can't specify exactly how many credits are being used when using the Ahrefs integration as this depends on the amount of data that is being pulled. Ahrefs migrated their API from v2 to v3, which changed how credits are calculated. Every request now has a minimum charge of 50 credits, even requests that previously cost under 10 credits. Ahrefs also reduced the total credits included per subscription tier, so limits may be hit sooner even without any change in usage habits.

To help manage credit usage, AgencyAnalytics caches Ahrefs data for 12 hours per client. As long as you view the same data with the same settings, no additional credits are used. However, each time you change a date range, filter, sort order, or page within an Ahrefs widget, a new API call is made and credits are charged again.

To keep usage in check, avoid frequently adjusting filters or date ranges when reviewing Ahrefs data. You can monitor your remaining credits in Ahrefs under Account Settings → Limits and Usage.

Can historical Ahrefs Backlinks data from before the Ahrefs integration connection date be displayed?

No, we back-fill any dates from before the integration connection date with the same data values as per the data showing on the date of the connection.

Does the Ahrefs integration support both HTTPS + HTTP protocols?

No, we currently only support the HTTP protocol as HTTP is the only protocol currently supported within the Ahrefs API.

What does "Maximum Items Per Request" refer to?

Maximum items per request relates to the total amount of credits we consume. You can request more total results, but at a cost of more credits per call.
